Teeth Whitening & Smile Design

Cosmetic work on the front teeth ranges from the very conservative to the irreversible. Whitening changes only colour and removes nothing. Composite bonding adds material to reshape a tooth. Veneers require a thin layer of the tooth to be removed permanently.

We start at the conservative end. It is also worth being clear about what whitening cannot do: it does not lighten crowns, existing fillings or veneers, and internal staining from tetracycline or fluorosis responds far less predictably than surface staining from tea, coffee or tobacco. Any gum disease or decay has to be dealt with first.

Symptoms & Indications

You might need this if…

  • Teeth that have yellowed or darkened over the years

  • A chipped or worn front tooth
  • Small gaps between the front teeth
  • An old front filling that no longer matches the tooth
  • A single tooth that has darkened after an old injury
Clinical Workflow

What happens, step by step

  1. 1

    Assessment

We check that the gums and teeth are healthy, identify what is actually causing the discolouration, and record your current shade. Internal and external staining behave very differently.

  2. 2

    Cleaning first

A scaling and polish is done before whitening. A good deal of what people take for yellowing is surface deposit, and removing it changes the starting point.

  3. 3

    Whitening

Either an in-clinic session with the gums isolated and protected, or custom trays with gel to use at home over about two weeks, or a combination. Home trays are slower but give you more control.

  4. 4

    Bonding or veneers, if needed

For shape rather than colour. Composite bonding is done directly at one visit and is reversible. Veneers are made in a laboratory, look better for longer, and require permanent reduction of the tooth. We will not recommend veneers where bonding will do.

  5. 5

    Review

We check the result, record the new shade and go through what will keep it.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions about Whitening & Smile Design

How much whiter will my teeth get?

It varies with the cause of the discolouration and your starting shade, so we will not promise a number of shades. Surface staining responds well. Internal staining from tetracycline or fluorosis responds much less, and we will say so before you spend anything.

Does whitening damage the enamel?

Professionally supervised whitening at appropriate concentrations does not damage enamel. Temporary sensitivity is common. The risk sits with unsupervised over-the-counter and salon products, particularly where the gums are not properly protected.

Will it whiten my crown or filling?

No. Whitening only acts on natural tooth. If you have a front crown or filling, whitening the teeth around it can leave it looking darker by contrast, and it may then need replacing to match. We will flag this beforehand.

How long does it last?

Usually somewhere between several months and a couple of years. Tea, coffee, smoking and paan shorten it considerably. Top-up gel for your home trays can extend it.

Aftercare & Recovery

Guidelines from Dr. Srushti Patel following your treatment:

  • Expect some sensitivity for one to two days after whitening; it settles.
  • Avoid strongly coloured food and drink — tea, coffee, red wine, turmeric, beetroot — for 48 hours.
  • Whitening is not permanent. Results fade over months to years depending on your diet and habits.
  • Tobacco and paan will undo the result quickly.
