Zirconia, ceramic and metal-ceramic

Crowns & Bridges

A crown covers a tooth completely, holding it together and taking the chewing load off a weakened structure. It is what protects a root-treated back tooth, a heavily filled tooth, or one that has cracked.

A bridge replaces a missing tooth by joining to the teeth either side of the gap. It is quicker than an implant and needs no surgery, but it does involve preparing those neighbouring teeth, which is an irreversible step. We will set out both options with their trade-offs rather than pushing one.

Symptoms & Indications

You might need this if…

  • A tooth that has had root canal treatment
  • A large old filling that keeps chipping, or a cracked tooth
  • A single missing tooth with healthy teeth on both sides
  • A crown that has come loose or fallen off
  • Heavy wear that has shortened the back teeth
Clinical Workflow

What happens, step by step

  1. 1

    Choosing the material

Zirconia is strong and tooth-coloured, and is the usual choice for back teeth. Layered ceramic gives the most natural appearance for front teeth. Metal-ceramic remains a durable and more economical option. We will explain which suits the tooth, the bite and your budget.

  2. 2

    Preparing the tooth

Under local anaesthetic, a thin, even layer is shaped from the tooth so the crown fits without sitting bulky against the gum or the opposing teeth.

  3. 3

    Recording the shape

An impression or scan is taken, along with a shade match against your neighbouring teeth in natural light.

  4. 4

    Temporary crown

A temporary crown protects the tooth while the permanent one is made. It is deliberately easy to remove, so avoid sticky food, and when you floss beside it, slide the floss out sideways rather than pulling it straight up — otherwise you will lift the temporary off.

  5. 5

    Fitting

We check the fit, the margin at the gum, the shade and the bite before cementing it. If anything is not right it goes back — a crown that is slightly high will give you problems for years.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions about Crowns & Bridges

Zirconia or metal-ceramic — which should I choose?

Zirconia is tooth-coloured throughout and does not show a dark line at the gum over time, which is why it is usually preferred. Metal-ceramic is durable and costs less. Both are appropriate treatments; the right answer depends on the tooth, your bite and your budget.

How long do crowns last?

Many last well over a decade, but it depends heavily on how you clean around them, whether you grind your teeth, and the condition of the tooth underneath. Nobody can give you a guaranteed figure.

Will the crown match my other teeth?

We shade-match against your adjacent teeth. A single front crown is the hardest match in dentistry, and we would rather take extra time at the shade appointment than fit something you are not happy with.

Bridge or implant for my missing tooth?

A bridge is faster and involves no surgery, but requires preparing the healthy teeth on either side. An implant leaves those teeth untouched but takes months and costs more upfront. We will go through both for your specific gap.

Aftercare & Recovery

Guidelines from Dr. Srushti Patel following your treatment:

  • Clean the margin where the crown meets the gum carefully — decay can still start there.
  • Use floss or an interdental brush daily; under a bridge, use the threader or brush we give you.
  • Avoid biting nut shells, ice or bottle caps.
  • If a crown feels high or you notice a new sensitivity, tell us rather than waiting for it to settle.
