Scaling, Polishing & Routine Check-ups

This is the least dramatic thing we do and by a wide margin the most valuable. Decay and gum disease are both painless in their early stages, which is exactly when they are quick and inexpensive to deal with. By the time a tooth hurts, the options are usually fewer and more expensive.

Hardened deposit — calculus, or tartar — cannot be removed by brushing at any level of effort. It has to be removed with instruments. That is what scaling is.

Symptoms & Indications

You might need this if…

  • It has been more than six months since your last check-up
  • Visible yellow or brown deposit at the necks of the teeth
  • Bleeding gums when you brush
  • Bad breath that does not go away
  • Staining from tea, coffee, smoking or paan
  • Nothing at all — this is the appointment you come to when nothing hurts
Clinical Workflow

What happens, step by step

  1. 1

    Examination

Every tooth checked for decay, existing fillings and crowns checked, gums assessed, and a check of the soft tissues of the mouth, tongue and throat. That last part is a screening for oral cancer, which matters a great deal in a country with high tobacco and paan use.

  2. 2

    Radiographs where indicated

Decay between teeth is not visible to the eye until it is well advanced. We take radiographs when clinically indicated rather than at every visit.

  3. 3

    Ultrasonic scaling

Deposits removed from above and below the gum line. If your gums are inflamed this can be tender; tell us and we can numb the area.

  4. 4

    Polishing

Removes surface stain and leaves the teeth smooth, which slows how quickly new deposit forms.

  5. 5

    Findings and plan

We tell you plainly what we found, what needs doing now, what can be watched, and what it will cost — before you commit to anything.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions about Cleaning & Check-ups

Does scaling loosen the teeth or damage the enamel?

No. This is a common worry and it is the wrong way round. What people feel is that the deposit which was splinting the teeth and filling the spaces has gone. Ultrasonic scaling removes deposit, not enamel.

How often do I actually need a check-up?

Every six months suits most people. If you have gum disease, diabetes, or smoke, three to four monthly is usually more appropriate. We will tell you what applies to you rather than giving a blanket answer.

Why does it hurt if my gums are healthy?

Scaling is more uncomfortable when the gums are already inflamed, which is itself a finding. Once the gums are healthy, cleaning appointments are generally comfortable.

Do I need to come if nothing hurts?

That is precisely when to come. Decay and gum disease do not hurt early on. A check-up is how a small filling gets found before it becomes a root canal.

Aftercare & Recovery

Guidelines from Dr. Srushti Patel following your treatment:

  • Some sensitivity for a day or two after scaling is normal, particularly if there was a lot of deposit.
  • Brush twice a day for two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste.
  • Clean between the teeth daily. This is the step almost everyone skips and it is where most problems start.
  • Book the next check-up before you leave — it is far more likely to happen.
