Root Canal Treatment
When decay or injury reaches the soft tissue in the centre of a tooth, that tissue becomes inflamed or infected. It does not heal on its own. Root canal treatment removes it, cleans and shapes the narrow canals inside the root, and seals them — which lets you keep the tooth rather than lose it.
It has a reputation for being painful. In practice the pain people remember is usually the toothache that brought them in. The treatment itself is done under local anaesthetic, and the relief generally begins the same day.

You might need this if…
- A deep, throbbing toothache, often worse at night or when you lie down
- Pain that lingers for more than a few seconds after something hot or cold
- A tooth that hurts to bite on, or feels raised
- Swelling of the gum or face near a tooth, or a bad taste from one spot
- A tooth that has darkened compared with its neighbours
- A large cavity or a cracked tooth, even without pain yet
What happens, step by step
- 1
Examination and radiograph
We examine the tooth and take a digital intraoral radiograph to see how far the decay has travelled and to check the shape and length of the roots. You will see the image on the screen and we will talk you through it.
- 2
Anaesthetic and isolation
The area is numbed. The tooth is then isolated so that the canals stay clean and dry during treatment and nothing reaches the rest of your mouth.
- 3
Cleaning and shaping the canals
The inflamed tissue is removed and each canal is cleaned, irrigated and shaped. A further radiograph confirms we have worked to the correct length inside the root.
- 4
Sealing
Once the canals are clean and dry they are filled and sealed. Depending on the tooth this happens at the same visit or the next one.
- 5
Protecting the tooth
A root-treated back tooth becomes more brittle and usually needs a crown to stop it fracturing. We will discuss the options with you before starting, so there are no surprises about the cost.
Frequently Asked Questions about Root Canal Treatment
Will the root canal hurt?
The procedure is done under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain while it is being carried out. Tell us at any point if you do — the anaesthetic can be topped up. Some tenderness for a couple of days afterwards is normal.
How many appointments will I need?
Usually one to three, depending on which tooth it is, how many canals it has, and whether there is active infection that needs to settle first. We will tell you the expected number at the first visit.
Is it better to just remove the tooth?
Removing a tooth is quicker and cheaper on the day. But the gap then needs an implant or a bridge to stop the neighbouring teeth drifting and the bone shrinking, which usually costs more in total. Keeping your own tooth is generally the better option where it is still restorable. We will tell you honestly if it is not.
Do I definitely need a crown afterwards?
For back teeth, almost always — they take the heaviest chewing load and are the most likely to split. For some front teeth a filling may be enough. We will explain which applies to your tooth.
Aftercare & Recovery
Guidelines from Dr. Srushti Patel following your treatment:
- Avoid biting hard on the tooth until it has been permanently restored.
- Mild tenderness for two to three days is normal; take the pain relief prescribed if you need it.
- Finish the full course of any antibiotic you are given.
- Come back for the crown at the agreed time — an unprotected root-treated tooth can fracture, and a fractured one often cannot be saved.
