Dental Implants

An implant replaces the root of a missing tooth. A small titanium post is placed into the jawbone, the bone grows onto it over a few months, and a crown is then attached on top. Unlike a bridge, it does not involve cutting down the healthy teeth on either side of the gap.

Implants are not right for everyone. They need enough bone to sit in, healthy gums, and reasonable control of conditions like diabetes. Smoking meaningfully reduces the chance of the implant integrating. We assess all of this before recommending one.

Symptoms & Indications

You might need this if…

  • A single missing tooth you would rather not have a bridge for
  • Several missing teeth in the same area
  • A removable denture that moves, clicks or rubs
  • A tooth that cannot be saved and needs planning for before it is removed
Clinical Workflow

What happens, step by step

  1. 1

    Assessment and planning

We examine the site, check your medical history, and take radiographs to measure the available bone. If the case needs three-dimensional imaging we will refer you for a CBCT scan and plan from that.

  2. 2

    Placing the implant

Carried out under local anaesthetic. The post is placed into the bone and the gum closed over or around it. Most people describe this as more comfortable than they expected — what you feel is pressure rather than the sharp pain people associate with a tooth.

  3. 3

    Healing

The bone integrates with the implant over roughly three to six months. Where the gap would show, a temporary tooth is provided so you are not left without one.

  4. 4

    The crown

Once integration is confirmed, an abutment and a custom crown are fitted. The crown is matched to the shade and shape of your other teeth.

  5. 5

    Review

We review the implant and show you how to clean around it. Implants do not decay, but the gum and bone around them can be lost to the same processes that cause gum disease, so cleaning and regular checks matter.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions about Dental Implants

How long does the whole process take?

Typically four to eight months from placement to final crown, because the bone needs time to integrate with the implant. Where the gap would show, a temporary tooth bridges that period.

Is the placement painful?

It is done under local anaesthetic and most people find it comparable to having a tooth removed. There is usually some swelling and tenderness for a few days afterwards.

How long will an implant last?

Implants can last many years, but they are not maintenance-free and no one can promise a lifespan. The main risks are gum disease around the implant and smoking. Daily cleaning and regular checks are what protect the investment.

Can I have an implant if I have diabetes?

Often yes, provided the diabetes is reasonably well controlled. Poorly controlled blood sugar slows healing and raises the risk of the implant failing. We will discuss your specific situation and may ask for recent blood work.

Aftercare & Recovery

Guidelines from Dr. Srushti Patel following your treatment:

  • Do not smoke — it is the single biggest controllable risk to an implant integrating.
  • Keep to soft food for the first week and avoid chewing on the site.
  • Clean around the implant daily with the brush or interdental aid we show you.
  • Attend the review appointments; problems around implants are usually painless until they are advanced.
