Gum Disease Treatment

Gum disease is the most common reason adults lose teeth, and it is largely painless until it is advanced. Bleeding when you brush is not normal and is not something to brush harder through — it is the early sign.

In the early stage, gingivitis, the damage is fully reversible. Once it progresses to periodontitis, the bone supporting the teeth is being lost, and lost bone does not come back. What treatment can do at that point is stop the loss and hold the position. That is why coming in early genuinely changes the outcome.

Clinical Workflow

What happens, step by step

  1. 1

    Charting

We measure the pocket depth around every tooth and record where there is bleeding and recession. This gives a baseline number, so at the review we can show you whether it is actually improving rather than guessing.

  2. 2

    Radiographs

To see how much supporting bone has been lost. This is what separates gingivitis from periodontitis and determines the treatment.

  3. 3

    Scaling and root surface debridement

Removing the hardened deposit above and below the gum line. For deeper pockets this is done under local anaesthetic, usually over two or more sessions by area.

  4. 4

    Technique coaching

The largest part of the result is what happens at home between appointments. We will show you interdental brushing on your own mouth, because this is the step most people are not doing effectively.

  5. 5

    Review and maintenance

We re-measure at six to eight weeks to see the response. Ongoing maintenance cleaning at three to six month intervals is what keeps it stable; periodontitis is a condition that is managed, not cured.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions about Gum Treatment

My gums bleed a little. Is that serious?

It is the earliest sign of gum disease and worth acting on. At the gingivitis stage it is completely reversible with proper cleaning. Left alone it can progress to bone loss, which is not.

Will treatment make my loose teeth firm again?

Treatment stops further bone loss and reduces inflammation, which often firms teeth up somewhat. Bone that has already been lost does not regrow with cleaning alone. Being honest about that is important before you start.

Why does deep cleaning need more than one visit?

Doing it properly under anaesthetic takes time, and treating the whole mouth in one sitting means a long appointment and more discomfort afterwards. Working by area is more thorough and more comfortable.

Is gum disease linked to other health problems?

There is a well-established two-way relationship with diabetes, and associations reported with cardiovascular disease and adverse pregnancy outcomes. We mention it because it affects how urgently the condition should be treated, particularly if you are diabetic or pregnant.

Aftercare & Recovery

Guidelines from Dr. Srushti Patel following your treatment:

  • Expect some sensitivity and slight recession as the inflammation resolves — this means the swelling has gone down.
  • Clean between the teeth daily with interdental brushes; a toothbrush alone cannot reach where this disease lives.
  • Stopping smoking has a large effect on the outcome — smokers' gums respond less well to treatment and heal more slowly.
  • If you are diabetic, better blood sugar control improves gum health, and treated gums improve blood sugar control.
